I just think their is happenstance things that make it well suited for the specific challenges in ways that is weaknesses aren't highlighted.Īs for the breath thing, I personally like difference in size and height comming up in play (I like making people actually think for a moment about the stuff they put on the sheet that people don't think of as having value, like say a 6ft deep water is a serious problem for a halfing, frustrating for a half-orc, an inconvenience for a goliath, kinda like how one doesn’t think much about their height until the smack their head on a door frame or get asked for something off the top shelf) and holding ones breath is a thing that has mechanics that builds can be tested on. I actually think this version of the gauntlet is pretty good at highlighting the strengths of the nuke wizard, which is half the intent of putting builds through it. Like the first room is designed to be a hard kill for anyone without AoE abilities, and the first build presented is an AoE damage specialist. I think it is fair to say that the gauntlet doesn't really interact with the strengths and weaknesses of casters, or at least the nuke wizard. It would be about as fair a challege but the nuke mage would have a much harder time due to the targeting rules and greater invisibility, shield spell hard counter, and counterspell as a shutdown effect on the spell array.Īnd it isn't like that would be a no effort fight for a martial, as they have some strong damage and mobility options. Like say if round 2 was a group of Mages (NPC stat blocks). Enemies specificly weak to force damage in part 2 when the build is deliberately trying to get optimum damage out of magic missile. Kill boxing part 1 with Freezing Sphere and Sickening radiance. But the the nuke wizard has alot of of specific things to the build even most wizards wouldn't have that are particularly effective against both encounters. (And still rewards choices like divine smite, wild shape, or subtle spell so it is not flatening the curve).Ī slowing effect would be another good one, as messing with reactions messes up alot of characters but also creates weirdness for characters reliant on mobility or reaction spell defenses like shield.Īnd again, this isnt really a strike against the gauntlet in concept. I feel like that the high amounts of water is strangely beneficial to nuke wizard (as Freezing sphere is unusually strong with it and enables a kill box strategy as used in the video), like I think Way of Four Elements monk would have a pretty easy time with this encounter because they could just cut off the sharks with shape the flowing river. But 6-7ft is not, (start requiring strength checks to move, and cause drowning as an issue, including interfering with verbal components). My primary concern on it is I don't see why about 4-5ft deep would be reasonable (enough to probably invoke underwater combat).
